SEASON OPENING - NEW ARTIST, BRIAN SKERRY

by Focus Gallery

We're excited about starting our 8th summer season in Chatham.  In addition to new work by all of our gallery artists, we are happy to welcome a new photographer to our group - Brian Skerry.

Brian is a well-known, award winning marine and underwater photographer, who has contributed to many cover stories, books and exhibitions for National Geographic.   We first met Brian following the publication of his book "SHARK" in 2017, which includes compelling photographs of Great White sharks in the Chatham area.  Brian kindly offered to do a book signing at the gallery, which attracted many of his fans - of all ages!

We recently collaborated with Brian to choose a select group of his photographs for a new limited edition, fine art print collection.  These are being introduced in the gallery this month and Brian will be at the gallery on Sunday, July 1 in his first appearance as a FOCUS Gallery artist.

These are wonderfully colorful, graphic images that would be a wonderful addition to any modern home or office.  Two standard print sizes will be offered, and a very limited "run" of prints of each image offered.  All prints are signed and numbered by Brian and certification provided.

Please join us on SUNDAY- JULY 1 at the gallery for the following:

Book Signing and "Meet the Artist" with Brian Skerry:  12:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Informal Evening Reception with Remarks by Brian:  6:00-8:00 p.m.

This is a public event and all ages are welcome!  We think this is a great opportunity for families to learn about ocean environments, photograph, and fine art together.

Yellow Boat - Simply Beautiful

by Focus Gallery in ,

A simple, vibrant yellow dory in on the beach in Brewster attracts many admirers and photographers in this area. Gallery artists Alison Shaw and Steve Koppel have captured the dory in several different styles.  These have become some of our best selling prints, framed in our white or black gallery frames or a matte silver.  A beautiful touch of Cape Cod for any home!

FIREPLACE TIPS (We've Done a Few!)

by Focus Gallery

Fireplaces continue to be a prominent feature of  living rooms, great rooms, dining rooms  - even bedrooms and kitchens in many of the homes we visit.   The artwork over the fireplace has a featuring role as well!  After working with hundreds of clients to find that "perfect" piece, here are some tips we can offer:

SHAPE MATTERS

Determine the best shape and size needed based on the space above the mantel.

For higher ceilings, choose a large vertical or square piece to best fill the area.   Hang 6-8 inches above the fireplace so that the eye is drawn to the artwork and fireplace together.

If ceiling height is an issue, choose a panorama with a narrow mat and frame to fill the area.

CONSIDER LIGHTING AND MANTEL USE

Sconces (or other lighting fixtures), candles, or other objects displayed on a mantel  should be consider when choosing the appropriate shape, size and positioning of the artwork.

There should be some "breathing space" between the artwork and sconces or other objects surrounding it on the wall.

CONSIDER THE BACKGROUND

Choose artwork and framing to enhance and complement the surrounding surface.  In this example, the neutral soft colors in the photograph are a match to the colors in the stonework.

CHOOSE FOR LOVE!

All tips aside, pick artwork that you love to look at as you sit in front of your fireplace.  The "right" artwork is a personal choice and is something you will treasure for years to come.
