FIREPLACE TIPS (We've Done a Few!)

by Focus Gallery

Fireplaces continue to be a prominent feature of  living rooms, great rooms, dining rooms  - even bedrooms and kitchens in many of the homes we visit.   The artwork over the fireplace has a featuring role as well!  After working with hundreds of clients to find that "perfect" piece, here are some tips we can offer:

SHAPE MATTERS

Determine the best shape and size needed based on the space above the mantel.

For higher ceilings, choose a large vertical or square piece to best fill the area.   Hang 6-8 inches above the fireplace so that the eye is drawn to the artwork and fireplace together.

If ceiling height is an issue, choose a panorama with a narrow mat and frame to fill the area.

CONSIDER LIGHTING AND MANTEL USE

Sconces (or other lighting fixtures), candles, or other objects displayed on a mantel  should be consider when choosing the appropriate shape, size and positioning of the artwork.

There should be some "breathing space" between the artwork and sconces or other objects surrounding it on the wall.

CONSIDER THE BACKGROUND

Choose artwork and framing to enhance and complement the surrounding surface.  In this example, the neutral soft colors in the photograph are a match to the colors in the stonework.

CHOOSE FOR LOVE!

All tips aside, pick artwork that you love to look at as you sit in front of your fireplace.  The "right" artwork is a personal choice and is something you will treasure for years to come.

Michael Kahn in Chatham - June 7 & 8

by Focus Gallery

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF APPEARANCE DATES!

We are very excited to be hosting gallery artist and master photographer, Michael Kahn, at FOCUS Gallery-Chatham on June 7 and 8.  Michael will be signing copies of his book "Spirit of Sailing" and over fifteen new prints from his limited edition collection of sailing and coastal images will be on display.

We've been fortunate to represent Michael's work for over four years.  It's great to see the reaction of visitors to the gallery who are seeing his photographs for the first time.  The dramatic images of magnificent J-class yachts, whose sails come alive with incredible light from behind, are further enhanced as black and white prints hand produced by Michael using traditional darkroom techniques.  Even gallery visitors who are not knowledgeable about sailing are captivated by these photographs.  Michael's elegant coastal beach and dune scenes with cloud-filled skies and roaring surf or flowing marsh grasses often render the viewer silent. These are locations and scenes many of us are familiar with, but they appear somehow better than we remember - through his interpretation.

Michael photographs are available as limited edition prints, in framed sizes ranging from 24" to 65."  The prints work well in traditional as well as contemporary settings, and the consistent square format and tonal quality also allow for these to be displayed effectively in groupings.

For details regarding Michael's upcoming visit to the gallery, or to inquire about purchasing prints, please call the gallery at 508.348.1493 (Chatham) or 781.383.0663 (Cohasset) or contact us via email at info@thefocusgallery.com.
